The Winds of Change

images (2)

By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

The little Angel
Who clutched your forefinger
While crossing the road
Now goes grocery shopping
On her own.

Your adorable little monkey
Whose voice was once
Soft and musical
Has now a deep resonance
A rich baritone.

A mute spectator
Like a lone wolf sniffing the air
I can feel it in my bones…
The winds of change are here to stay.

Daughter uses your makeup
And fits in your clothes
Son can fit in
Your husband shoes
And your wardrobe is no more your own.

Kids giving their opinions
Raised voices; sometimes arguing,
No more mute submissions
Friends; data package; passwords; cell phones,
Taking precedence over family outings.

A mute spectator
Like a lone wolf sniffing the air
I can feel it in my bones…
The winds of change are here to stay.

Once raven hair
Now sprinkled with grey
Once supple body that bore two kids
Now has creaking joints and backaches
Even the driving licence to be renewed every five years.

Grandparents; now departed souls
Parents slowly getting old
Those broad shoulders that weathered all storms; now bent
The hands that once firmly enveloped mine
Now shrivelled; shrunk and unsteady.

A mute spectator
Like a lone wolf sniffing the air
I can feel it in my bones…
The winds of change are here to stay.

Caught Within the Winds

images

By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

Like a chorus of angels singing
Putting the separation to an end
Finally the summer arrives…
Never ever did I wait for summer to come
Like now I do, for You, my migratory birds
To come home…
As your train arrives at the station
You, remind me of a bird fleeing the branch
Yet always coming back, homebound.
Your wings have not yet grown
And, I don’t know how it would happen
But I have to let you fly.

*****

Soaring to where the dreams come alive
Expanding your horizons
Feeling the wind beneath your wings.
But there’s one thing
That you should always bear in your mind
That you are stronger than the winds
Glide away, ride the wind
Bend, if necessary, and you’ll never break
Keep going
Not only for reaching the end
But for the satisfaction
You’ll get from within.

*****

When my second chick launches
Itself leaving behind an empty nest
And the last echo of his voice
Is swallowed by the din of the bustling city
When the spring is over
And the last dewdrop
Clings to a shadowed blade.
When the last goodbye
Is tearfully sighed from quivering lips
When the last crackled leaf releases a barren branch
That’s when I know I’ll not be alone,
That you both will be home.

*****

Even if it is…
For a fortnight…
You both will be home…

It’s never easy for parents to see the children leave. It took me 20 years to understand the  pain and loneliness my parents must have gone through…
As I stand at the same threshold where they stood 20 years ago, I can only pray to God to give me the strength to let them go and chalk out a life for themselves.

Never To Surrender Never To Yield

IMG_20160723_145132

Almost everything in life is controllable,
Fear; illusion; destruction
Except for time, tide and Karma*
It’s something that is endless,
Never pausing for a moment
To wait for us to catch up.

*****

Don’t let the time go by
Unnoticed and unlived
Be conscious of the way
It slips from our hands.
There is no pause button on the time wasted
No caste, creed or religion can ever halt the time.

*****

The universe conspires
Offering unstoppable life in action
For, it never does retreat
In glory or in death
Our glory is history
Our deeds legendry and our battles bloody.

*****

Sooner or later
Our Karma catches up with us
Relieving us of our burden
And setting the records straight.
Riding on the tides of our actions
We reap as we sow.

Karma* – (in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. It is good or bad luck, viewed as resulting from one’s actions

One More Candle Needs To Be Lit

download

By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

Graying strands
Receding hairline
20 kgs overweight
A firm decision
To work them off
But laziness prevails.

Certain morning stiffness
In my joints
Age spots; Staring at my face,
In the bathroom mirror
And wish I hadn’t
The puzzled wisdom prevails.

Is it the mid life crisis?
Or just me, being a petulant lady?

Faint traces of wrinkles
Of many laughs and many frowns
The presence of absences
Of children, filling the void
Short temper…?
Or zero tolerance to bull shit…?

Maybe old habits are just getting in the way
My life is on the brink
Of deconstructing itself
To the periphery of the universe
A discourse of silence
Insomnia; comfort eating; solitude.

Is it the mid life crisis?
Or just me, being a petulant lady?

Having made friends
With unemployment
Whilst my social life
Has conveniently come to a standstill
Actions still being based on reactions
Progression: placid or brisk.

Clock chimes at midnight
A tiny drop of dew,
Hanging like a whisper from my forehead
Trickling down: hot flushes
Sweating; wide awake in bed
Followed by a shiver, cold and true.

Is it the mid life crisis?
Or just me, being a petulant lady?

Maybe, one more candle needs to be lit…

Just a Wink Away

download (1)

 By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

Sometimes
When I lay at night
I find myself floating along
On the waves of expressions;
Mesmerized by the poetic verses
That flow through my mind
Playing; taunting; teasing me
To get up; compose a new verse.

*****

Lost in a world of my own
Disconnected from the surrounding
Undetected from the radar
As the thoughts sweep and bleep
Unable to make some sense
Sometimes I win, sometimes I don’t.
But the night won’t ever be the same again
Eyes tired from being awake.

*****

Sleep; Locked away
Behind towering fortresses of mind
Drifting along with the breeze of thoughts
Disintegrating at the slightest movement
Letters, words, sentences; all dancing
A mystery. A jigsaw; to be solved
And sleep….. Sleep: so cunningly elusive
Just a wink away…but, it just won’t come to me!!
