Life Touches You Like That

Wandering aimlessly,
Begging for food to assuage his hunger
He wore a shirt,
Old and tattered…
Holes in places, faded all over;
Sans buttons;
Chest plastered with bandages;
Of injuries unknown to me.

It was so ironic,
Me alighting from my car.
Going to buy samosas* to eat,
Not out of hunger.
But because of my whims,
He a beggar.
With not a penny on him,
Hungry; famished,
But no penny to buy food.

His eyes; they follow me inside.
Searching for a favor,
Those goodies visible,
Through the showcase; taunting him.
The look he gave shall never leave me.
An unsaid plea;
It made me wonder;
Is Life all about wearing,
A good shirt and having money in your pocket?

I guess… a few moments is all that it took,
For me to make up my mind.
And offer help,
I ordered a meal for him too.
Handing it over; I saw,
Puzzled look of the customers,
His face lit up; eyes expressing thanks.
I had no words…
Was I being generous, or just doing my duty?

As I walked away from him,
I realized…
Life touches you like that…

*A samosa or samoosa, is a fried or baked dish with a savoury filling, such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, lentils, macaroni, noodles or minced meat

PS:- This is a true incident which happened with me today.
