The Silent Train: Prosetry

By:- Ranjeeta Nath Ghai

Cocooned in the belly of the serpent, crawling through the night. Sleep eludes me and I sit down to write. Serpentine movement rocks me as though in a cradle with lullaby’s missing, replaced by the sound steel wheels rattling along the rails
Lying peacefully, listening to the rattling steel wheels, I have ample time to reflect on the days gone by and the days ahead. When you came home I had thirty days to look forward to. Now lying awake in the night, as the snake rattles towards its destination. I rue at the time constraint I’m put through.
Lying awake, I could feel the ground beneath me shake. My mind racing a hundred miles an hour wonders how time seems to have flown by!! It was only yesterday you lay in a foetal position cuddled in my bosom and today you sleep independently on a full berth! Then you were only one…today you are twenty one!
Peering through the windows I look into the night. Nothing specific I see.  Only two parallel track never to meet. No fog, only light mist and infinite darkness. It’s a dark night. Looking down from above, I see my own shadow among them rails running silently together through the dark.
Train continues with its journey. Rolling past like a snake in the night; winding through the trails of nowhere. Sitting by the window, I see distant lights wink through the dark abyss as though flirting with me. The silence falls…as passengers go off to sleep. Its 4 am now. Guess it’s time for me to nestle under the covers.
