A Tribute: Happy Birthday Maa

Ponytails to perming.
Henna to streaking
Periods to childbirth.
Approaching thunderstorms
To fallen trees
A flood of emotions
Childhood memories
And emotional saturation
Threatening to overflow
The banks of memories.
I had trained myself
To hold my breath
Coordinating it with yours
Listening to your heart beat
As I cuddled up beside you
Nestled in the curve of your arm.
Chasing happiness
In a life full of imperfections
Dogged by challenges
Pursuing careers and my passion
I found solace in your company.
Comfort. Consolation. Cheer.
Three words.
One identity.
Maa

Childhood Calling

susie-pryor-6

By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

Getting caught in troubles,
Hop scotching. Skipping. Jumping. Falling.
I would jump and skate,
Being a dare devil,
Always getting bruises and scars,
But that didn’t stop me from going bizarre.

***

I wish today,
I could behave like I did as a kid.
To be out in the sea,
Soaking up the sun and playing in the sand.
Sifting sand through laughter and,
Digging holes with hands.

***

Jumping on a wave,
Waiting for them to crash,
Avoiding the undertow…
Rather…today I just enjoy,
The ocean breeze and the ocean view.
Counting the waves.

***

Revisiting my childhood,
Playing and jumping around.
Unburdened, without any aim.
I wish I could go back and find it:
That moment.
And get back there.

***

Running  silly to catch butterflies.
Tying the dragon flies together by their tails; then setting them free.
Plucking flowers from a tree,
Gathering wild berries,
Disappearing into bushes green.
Running on the playground of life,
Today, I look back with yearning eyes.

***

Jumping on the pavement,
Kicking my shoes off and laying down on grass.
Basking in the presence of the world,
Jumping over life’s petty troubles.
I found that peace and left my stress.
What else could I ask for in life?

Walking With the Moon

il_fullxfull.396295458_lw4u

By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

Breeze whispering into my ears.
Puddles on the ground,
Reflecting the heavens above.
Potholes brimming with rainwater,
Teasing; a perfect invitation for splashing around.

***

A cool starless misty night.
The streetlights seem ghostly,
Through a misty haze.
Rushing of wings; hooting owls, and,
Mist doesn’t enslave my eyes anymore.

***

Folded jeans; bunch of friends,
Cracking jokes in a lighter vein.
Heading for the tea vendor on the sidewalk,
Walking along the windswept winding roads,
Lining my neighborhood.

***

The moon bears witness,
Pushing through the clouds.
Small trails of dew visible,
In dark, tangled foliage,
Leaves cover the path, undisturbed.

***

I saunter softly by a jagged tree trunk,
Through the lonely dark valley,
Sorting through life’s’ simple pleasures, and utter miseries.
Knowing; realizing; that sometimes answers are only found,
When you feel alive, walking with the moon.

A Tune So Grand

melody

By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

The muffled sound of your baby breathing.
Voice of your parents on the phone.
Sharing thoughts with your beloved,
Or screaming of kids as they play.

***

In the midst of silence; at nightfall,
The sky turns into a sheet of gray.
Thunder, lightning and droplets of rain,
Pleasantly came sprinkling down; appearing to entertain.

***

Close your eyes,
Breathe in; free your mind;
As crystalline beads,
Gently drip onto the ground in a soft melody.

***

The call of fall when cascading leaves,
Twirl to the ground spinning and pirouetting.
Whistling wind penetrating our souls, and,
Raging rivers leave the marks of melodies in stone.

***

Sing along to the sounds of the world,
Listen intently to different beats.
Each of us has a unique rhythm,
As we make our own melody.

***

Hum and whistle,
The melody in your heart.
Dance to a tune so grand,
That ultimately makes your soul tremble.

A Shattered Dream

The-Death-of-the-Princess-Tarakanoff

 By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

Trembling and bewildered,
Standing bravely in the middle of a crisis,
Heart remaining the same as it is,
She acts…
Her woes,
Obviously masked.

***

Those blank expressions,
Her scars she’s hidden after the incident.
No one knows,
She’s dying inside.
No one knows,
How much is weighing down on her shoulders.

***

I could see,
Something beyond the obvious.
Turmoil;
Underneath the careful blank slate.
Tears she keeps back in her empty eyes,
Quivering lips; through the forged smile.

***

Lives slump over days
Those trivial quarrels;
Never will come back
Forever gone
The long hallway to hope disappears
And disappointment take hold.

***

What isn’t obvious to all, is her tears,
The ones that she lets flood out,
After shutting her bedroom door at night..
Noose and death fill her thoughts.
Hollowness;
Loneliness sets in,
Resting in the intangible.

This poem is dedicated to a dear friend of mine who has lost her minor son to the jaws of death. May God give strength and courage to the parents to bear this loss.

Awakening: A Bittersweet Ache

download

By:- rANJEETA nATH gHAI

Mistakes
Reminders of failure.
Sometimes voluntarily; by design
Other accidental; by default; by habit.
Trying hard to be perfect.
Time goes by,
Days turn to weeks,
Weeks to months and years.

*****

Unable to accept,
We are but flawed creatures.
Truth be told,
There’s no such thing as a mistake.
Only lessons learned,
Accidents. Mistakes. Risks.
Not negative; Always on our mind,
Help us learn and grow.

*****

Learning;
Sometimes from ours, or,
Other’s mistakes.
Are experiences,
Always with us; never forgotten.
Lingering in the back of your mind,
Inventions: only creations of accidents,
And mistakes the secret of knowledge.

*****

Learning;
Doesn’t always mean new.
Sometimes one needs,
To unlearn to learn.
The reasons may not be clear,
Whether good or bad; we’ll learn.
Mistakes. Learning.
Are two sides of the same coin.
