Book Reviews

‘Books’ are the store of knowledge and wisdom. They contain a variety of pleasures. Reading books makes our mind strong and broaden our outlook. Reading of books gives us a great pleasure. Write a book review that describes, analyzes and evaluates. The review should convey an opinion and support it with evidence from the book.

Points to ponder as you write a book review:

  • Does the book fit general field or genre??
  • What is the author’s style? Formal? Informal? Suitable for the intended audience?
  • Is the author’s concluding chapter, the summary, convincing?
  • Include title, author, place, publisher, publication date, edition, pages, special features (maps, etc.), price, ISBN.
  • Hook the reader with your opening sentence.
  • Review the book you read — not the book you wish the author had written.
  • If this is the best book you have ever read, say so — and why. If it’s merely another nice book, say so. Don’t be too judgmental and humiliating.
  • Include information about the author that is relevant to the book.
  • Don’t review books by people you know, love, or hate. Keep personal feeling out of this. Professionalism always pays.

Bringing Up Kids

Raising a child can be the most daunting task and a rewarding experience at the same time. It’s also the job for which people receive the least formal training and no rewards or medals. Parenting is all about getting the balance right.

Each person’s knowledge of how to bring up a child usually comes from their surroundings and their own upbringing and their experiences of raising their own kids.

Parents are the most influential role models children are likely to have. We reap what we sow. Parents who pay compliments and show respect, kindness, honesty, friendliness, hospitality and generosity to their children will encourage them to behave in the same way.

  • Write articles, short stories or real-time experiences. Be honest. Don’t forget to mention how you fared. We are here to learn from our mistakes and mistakes made by others.
  • Be specific and clear in your expressions.
